Yeah. I think dan used 'gender roles' as shorthand to reference all the complexities of the concept of gender, like how its a social construct (and dan's video tries to argue that you can talk about gender in a purely biological sense, which, I think, general consensus among the experts is that the two inform each other). much simpler that way, if a tad inaccurate.

As for MvW... It always seemed like a stupid, low-hanging fruit premise for a video, even for a collab, and the "lol boners and periods" irritated me. Not my favourite DINOF vid. The updates to the doobleydoo interest me more than the content of the video.

Trans people for example reject the gender they were socially assigned to become their true gender, so it means that gender does exist inherently outside of social construction, doesn't it? It is the same with non binary people or people who have other genders. Surely those are not social constructs? I am talking about gender themselves not gender roles and gender perceptions that are obviously social constructs. I don't understand how genders could be a social construct when they exist marginally.

ehhh... pls don't shit on me if i'm oversimplifying this, but gender roles are social constructs regarding what 'men and women' should/shouldn't do which also conform to the 'gender is binary' idea ('women like pink', 'men are the breadwinners', etc) and gender itself is determined by your brain through genetics, hormones and social factors, yes? and #blacklivesmatter refers to the disproportionate police brutality faced by african-americans. if dan spends as much time as he claims to on tumblr, he probably knows the meaning of that. but yeah 'gender roles' probs wasn't the most accurate term he could have used in that context, maybe 'gender stereotypes' would work better.
