The worst job/job experience you've ever had

Post by Turtleoftruth »

So I can't see a thread with this topic yet, so thought I'd make one!

What is the worst job you've ever had? The most terrible boss? The worst thing you've been asked to do?

I've had bosses contradict their own statements before, and not pay me an entire week of wages, I've had jobs where there were snotty customers and I've had people about to phone the police before for no reason, but I'm sure you guys have funnier stories :)

I work in retail so I have millions of these stories haha

Off the top of my head, I remember this woman once asked me to watch her baby while she tried on clothes even though we have a family change room

Give examples guys! I'd love to hear hahaha.

I worked in a chippy and the boss (who smoked weed, which explains his mind) told me to never leave the till as we don't live in a safe area.
He also told me to keep the fridge stocked, which I would have to leave the till and go downstairs to do.
He then said if you can't, then get someone else to bring the stock up. I asked my colleagues and got the answer 'we're not your slave you know!'

Colleagues/employers can be more irrational than customers in my experience! :')

I don't think I have any really bad job experiences (nothing comes to mind anyway), most of the "worst experiences" are more silly questions with obvious answers that customers ask, such as "what's buy one, get one free?" and if pepperoni is vegetarian.... then the odd man old enough to be my father trying to chat me up!

My boss was technically sexually harassing me. I say technically because I can't deny, he was hot as f**k but I don't mix personal and business lol. It was at a pizza shop and monday was usually dead which is when he'd make advances the most since it was only him, myself and the waitress. He'd flash me his six pack, tell me I have beautiful eyes ect. If he weren't my boss I probably would have tapped that. He was 26 and I was 18 at the time.

The only real bad experience was at another job in an office where my hand accidentally rubbed a co-worker's dick. So freaking embarrassing at the time but hilarious looking back. I didn't know he was behind me and my hand ended up there while turning around. My boyfriend at the time heard about it through his best friend who was working at the office but he was on a different shift than me so evidently, it was gossiped about and got around. XD

Oh wait I forgot, this is technically work related. I drank too much at the Christmas party not knowing that homemade beer is way stronger than regular beer, fell flat on my ass outside/could not stand up for shit while trying to have a smoke and got kicked out of the club that the party was being held at and rightfully so. I was a hazard waiting to happen. I was so ashamed when I showed up the following Monday that I contemplated quitting.

Referring to the boss, he'd get ridiculously close as well during the compliments and/or flirting, like personal bubble close.

I had one job at a bar where
1) The boss constantly grabbed my ass
2) The boss constantly told me he loved my boobs
3) The boss always talked about sex with me
4) The boss paid for another coworker's boob job (probably her sugar daddy and sleeping with her, she was around 22)
5) His "business partner" would always try to take me out to lunch to "discuss something" and would always call me on my cell
6) The boss offered to take me on a shopping spree because my outfits weren't skanky enough for work
7) I got paid in cash and didn't even keep my own tips.. I'd get $10 an hour and another 10 or 20 more depending on how busy it was, because "I was still new"
8) Didn't get paid at all for the first two nights I worked because I was still training and being tested out
9) I HAD to drink and accept shots
10) If I told the boss or a coworker a guy was sexually harassing me, like rubbing my thigh, I would be encouraged to go talk to him more because I'd get more tips from him (which I wouldn't even keep)
11) It was always dead, the only customers who came in were the boss' gross friends, who would get drinks on the house
12) He jokingly told everyone I was his new wife
13) There was so much more.. can't be bothered to add more

Pretty sure they were trying to run some underground escort or sugar daddy ring. I only lasted about 5 nights before I walked out after being left completely alone in the bar with a man who constantly touched me. I cried every single night after my shifts because I felt so dirty and gross. I was so desperate for a job that I tried as hard as possible to keep doing it but I just couldn't keep going. There was no proof I ever worked there, no paperwork or anything and no witnesses besides the dirty old men so I don't even know if I would have been able to do much. But clearly there are some girls who love this type of work/lifestyle because the other girls employed seem to have enjoyed it and thrive in it.

It's disgusting that they even thought that was acceptable! Good on you for leaving! :))

I've had some terrible experiences with patients when I worked at a nursing home. One patient yelled at me because I tried to make her lunch look nice (she was allergic to the normal spreads and had her own stuff). She was saying that I tried to controll her, and that what and how much she ate was none of my business.
I can't really handle when people yell at me for no reason, so when she left I started crying x) (I'm a crier, I cry at everything)
Just last week we only had one dishwasher for 3 departments/section/ward where I work now. We usually have one dishwasher per department/section/ward (I work at a hospital and do the dishes at 4 different "posts", idk what you'd call it in English, haha). That was pretty stressful..
Mostly patients and nurses especially are just really rude. One time I got my finger stuck between a table and the wall, and I was saying like "Ow, shit, oowww" etc, and the nurse walked in and said "Oh, it's just you?"
:(

Wow, that's terrible, you could probably of gone to the police about that tbh. I'm surprised you lasted 5 days, I wouldn't of lasted half a day

I worked as a hostess last summer at the worst restaurant ever. They're the busiest franchise restaurant in my country and I really wanna call them out but whatever. First off the hours I got were crap. For some shifts they would let me go home after two hours and sometimes they would make me work almost 13 hours. Mind you they never tell you when you're off and they don't allow breaks. So a 13 hour shift is 13 hours on your feet(minus some occasional slacking during bathroom checks).

I got my septum pierced a few weeks after I was hired and the owner got so pissed off. The funny thing is, one of the shift managers has her lip pierced, another hostess has her lip pierced and some of the waitresses have nose piercings/tattoos. She pretty much said that if I don't hide it I'm fired. I didn't bring up the other people because I didn't want to get in trouble, I really needed the money. The ring I had was too big to flip up so I had to change it and my piercing got really irritated.

Also, some of the kitchen staff were so rude; literally a pack of 30 year old men putting me down and I was only 16 years old.

But this is the real fuckery. I booked off a day a month in advance for a concert I was going to with my friends. A few weeks later I checked my schedule and they scheduled me for work. I went to the owner to see if there was a misunderstanding and apparently I never actually booked the day off. Even though I remember putting pen to paper in the book, unless i'm delusional. She took out a different book and showed me the day that I booked off and my name wasn't on it. She said that I never booked it off and the shift manager that gave me the book I put my name in went along with her even though she saw me write in it. I think the shift manager gave me an old write-off notebook and her or another manager saw it and threw it out. Nobody wanted to cover my shift even though I covered everybody's when they asked me to. I literally quit on the spot and came back a week later to pick up my paycheck.

There's so much dumb things they made me do as well; I can write a book about how shitty they treated me. I worked at McDonald's for minimum wage when I was 14 and I had a far far far far far better experience.

^ Omg I was a hostess too at a chain restaurant and it was pretty terrible as well. The entire staff - cooks, servers, managers- spoke down to me. The kitchen chefs are usually assholes, I remember this one female chef hated my guts for no reason. And the other chefs had thick accents I couldn't understand so when they did yell at me I just smiled and walked away. The servers blamed me if they didn't get a lot of people in their section even though the customers would specifically request a booth or the bar, the servers would slack on cleaning their own tables (they're supposed to clean as much as they can on their own especially if it's dead) etc. ugh terrible position. The worst was when you would get called in a Sunday morning or a holiday, stand there for two hours with literally no customers coming in, and get sent home. The job is brutal when there is no customers to seat, so you just stand there for long periods of time, or clean something even though you've cleaned it 10 times already. After years of working as a hostess, they refused to upgrade me to a server. At 19 and in college, I was working alongside 15-17 year olds still in high school.

I got so fucking fed up and I got "hired" as a server at another chain restaurant but because I had no serving experience, they wanted me to start off as a hostess and make my way up to a server once I knew the menu. I literally thought this meant like a week of hostessing, then start training to be a server. It never happened, 3 months of hostessing and they never made me a server and were never going to (as other servers told me, once you're a hostess there's no way you're switching to serving, not to mention the fact that they hired servers while I was a hostess) so I left too.

It took forever to find a restaurant that was willing to hire me as a server with no serving experience. The whole "start as a hostess and work your way up" rarely happens.. the best way is to just lie and say you've served before, and hope they don't ask for references.

^Yes! The worst thing is passive aggressive servers. You barely seat them and they give you dirty looks but if you double seat them once(mostly because some people want a booth) they totally freak out; but instead of coming to talk to you directly, on the seating plan they write something totally vile and uncalled for. The restaurant I worked at was full of catty 20 year old girls that did that to me every damn shift.

Ohhhhh do I have some stories. My first job ever was at an ice cream store wherein the manager was a complete ass hole who was pocketing cash from the store's safe to buy drugs. All of us knew he was doing it, but being the stupid, cowardly kids we were, we didn't say anything to the owner for months and months. My second job was at a different ice cream store, and the owner was just a nightmare. She was notorious for supplying her UNDERAGE employees with weed and alcohol. She would take shots with this 19 year old employee while at work, then let him drive home drunk. I finally quit because she was getting on my ass for "talking to my coworkers too much" while on the clock. I'm sorry what? She even threatened to fire me over this. Bitch please! I'm not allowed to talk to my coworkers when it's slow and all we are doing is sweeping floors, etc??? After she threatened to fire me, I quit without even giving my 2 weeks notice. Fuck her. I'm still very tempted to report her for supplying her underage employees with drugs and alcohol.

I worked at walgreens for three months and I've never dealt with so many horrible people before.

-We found a crack pipe in the back to school section
-Someone shit on the floor in front of the bathrooms
-Someone shit on a chair in the waiting area of the pharmacy
-I had a couple old dudes ask me on dates or for my number
-These guys came in asking for money and also asked the pharmacist for a medication they had no prescription for. When they left they went through the drive-thru and did the same thing. Then when my boss was outside they reached for her purse but stopped because another customer turned the corner. After all of that they went to the receiving door and were banging on it.
-I had to key in some old ladies coupons because they weren't ringing up and the lady behind her was sighing dramatically and just as the older lady was paying the other one leaned over the counter and starting yelling "Are you done?! Are you done yet?" And then grabbed her stuff and walked off dramatically. Then the old lady didn't believe I was giving her the discount with her coupons so she was complaining and saying she hopes she doesn't have to come back.

I know there's more but those happened the most recently.

I worked at a sporting goods/farming store for about a year and that was probably my worst job. Only a couple people there liked me that I knew from school, otherwise idk what everyone's problem was but for some reason they just did not like me. Everyone who worked there just had this bitchy attitude and talked shit about everyone, it was very high school drama-ish. The FEO people (customer service, they were kinda in charge of the cashiers) wrote me up for things I didn't do, gave me bad reviews on my little evaluation things (like they stand by you in your register and see how you're interacting and if you're saying the correct phrases and shit, and I always said what I was supposed to and was friendly with customers etc etc but they said I was doing a poor job and not saying phrases yada yada). I was close to being fired just because of them writing me up for things I didn't do and giving me bad reviews on the evaluations.

Then one of the guys, mid-40s I'm assuming, who worked in the automotive department, made a lot of girls uncomfortable. He would hit on everyone, and if you got off work the same time as him he'd try to get you to come over to his car with him. Another guy a year older than me would do the same thing and no one would do anything about it? During the time I worked there I know for sure at least 2 girls complained about them but nothing was ever done about it.

Finally after a year I quit and whenever I go in there to get something there are always new people working there. No one really stays there very long because everyone hates it lol.

I work in retail so I could literally go on for days. The other day, this woman came in with her son (Who couldn't have been much older than 3) and he really had to go to the bathroom, and we didn't have any bathrooms in our store. I told the woman that she could take her son to the food court upstairs because there was a bathroom there and she ignored me and kept browsing for clothes, and acting like she was deaf and couldn't hear her son complaining and whimpering.

What does the kid do? He pees all over the place and the mother yelled at my manager for it, saying how she needs to get a mop and clean it up immediately. It was HER fault for ignoring her son and not taking him to the bathroom, but she yells at us? Typical shopper, they all think they're so entitled when they walk into a store.

I was working for a customs broker for 4.5 years.

For four of those years, my work was constantly scrutinized, despite my work being just as fine as anyone else's... I actually knew more about the program and made less mistakes than my other co-workers (I know this because anytime I had to handle someone's accounts when they were out, I ALWAYS had to correct stuff. I'm just not a snitch...). My desk was the only desk that wasn't private...

It had just become so oppressive... and I always felt singled out. There was one co-worker who was free to lose business with truckers and make mistakes that are massively fine-able... But it was only me getting in trouble... when I wasn't even making those types of mistakes. Most of my mistakes were internal record keeping things my boss demanded, like not writing down I emailed someone, which admittedly I found like a waste of time, because we were forced to copy in EVERYONE on our emails.

My boss was a piece of work too. He had all these opinion on how we should have been working, without actually knowing how to do any of the stuff we did. Then he'd make us fill out a checklist about it or some such shit. I remember after some issue in the office, telling my co-worker "I don't care how we fix it as long as I don't have another checklist to keep in my files"

In the end, we were all over-worked. My boss would always cryptically send us emails about how we were a team, but it was not possible to be a team at all, no one had time to be a team-mate. We all had too much shit to do.

My boss said he fired me because I forgot to send documents to US Customs. It was the first actual mistake I had made in months. In reality, My Terrible-Coworker likely pressured him into hiring one of her friends from another company. My Nice-Coworker reported that Terrible-Coworker said they were very experienced, but they have been nothing but awful. And she and Terrible-Coworker have been constantly making mistakes.

I really hope my boss gets fined.
Being unemployed sucks, but the stress from my job had been making me pull my eyebrows out. And as stressful as it is to have an uncertain future, I've been so much less irritated and feel better than I have in years.
